Gunther will go down in history as the WWE Superstar who has held the Intercontinental Championship longer than any other. The Austrian captured the gold on SmackDown in June 2022 with a victory over Ricochet, and he hasn’t lost his belt since.

The Austrian has become a menace on the roster with his dominance over other fighters, and this time he has shattered the record of being the fighter who has held the title for the most days. His reign has already completed 620 days and counting, and therefore he has surpassed Pedro Morales, who in his two reigns as Intercontinental Champion, added a total of 617 days recognized by WWE. This is the first title Gunther has won on the main roster, and it’s already company history.

During this historic reign, he has had great defenses, such as the one we saw in Clash at the Castle against Sheamus, the triple threat with the Celtic warrior and Drew McIntyre, or, more recently, the trilogy of matches against Chad Gable on several episodes of Monday Night Raw.

All in all, Gunther remains a solid champion, and although it does not seem that he will defend his title at Elimination Chamber, barring a last-minute plot twist, he will surely be defending his title at WrestleMania 40, although WWE still does not give clues about who could be the candidate to take the title from him, although Jey Uso is being positioned as a candidate. And he likely would’ve, according to a recent source who revealed that he wasn’t supposed to lose the match on the latest edition of RAW.

WWE’s last-minute change

The most recent edition of Monday Night Raw had the Intercontinental Championship match between Gunther and Jey Uso as the main event. Due to the intervention of the latter’s brother, Jimmy Uso, the leader of Imperium took the victory and continued his reign. However, it seems that this was not agreed upon at the beginning.

According to WrestleVotes, a source revealed that several people within the company believed that Jey Uso was going to win the match against Gunther tonight. In fact, as of 6 p.m., that was the actual outcome in the program summaries within the creative and digital departments. However, as we all know now, Jimmy intervened, and now we will most likely see the twins facing each other at the ‘Showcase of the Immortals’. So, what do you think? Who would be the one dethroning Gunther, in your opinion? Let us know in the comments.
