In a recent media interaction, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue named James Harden and Russell Westbrook as honorary All-Stars. On February 1st, 2024, the NBA announced its reserves, and the list did not include the two seasoned players, while Kawhi Leonard and Paul George from the Clippers were named All-Stars.

Giving props to Kwahi for making the All-Star cut, NBA Legend and Clippers coach Ty Lue said, “When he plays, he’s top-five talent in the league“. But he wasn’t hesitant to add that Leonard’s success in the team wouldn’t have been possible without James Harden.

Lue acknowledged the contributions Harden has made to the team, further praising him for “coming in and being a traditional point guard who can get guys involved but also score.” He went on to add, “James has played a big, huge part in where we at today and so just happy to have him… he’s one of our All-Stars as well.”

Given that there are only 14 spots open in the All-Star reserves, snubs are inevitable given the immense talent in the League. James Harden has had a long run in the All-Star games boasting an impressive 11-year run straight from 2013 to 2022. The Beard is currently averaging 17.2 points, 4.9 total rebounds, and 8.5 assists.

In terms of scoring, Harden ranks third on the Clippers. If he was selected alongside his teammates, Leonard and PG, the Clippers would have been the only team with three All-Stars.

The ‘sacrifice’ leading to championship

NBA Legend Ty Lue also included Russell Westbrook in his All-Star list. Coach Lue added, “Along with Russ, who has sacrificed so much… To me, all four of those guys are All-Stars.”

Initially, when Harden first came on to the team, the Clippers struggled despite having a 4 All-Stars lineup. However, all that changed soon after Westbrook took up a bench role to facilitate improved team functioning and cohesion.

Veteran Russell Westbrook is nearing the 25,000 career points milestone, currently sitting at 24,827 points. He ranks 25th on the all-time scoring list.

Coach Lue gave props where props were due and rightfully included James Harden and Russell Westbrook in his All-Star list. However, neither of the two seasoned ballers seems to be fazed by the non-inclusion of their names on the reserves list.

The 73rd NBA All-Star Game is all set to take place in Indianapolis on February 18th, but the Beard and Russ have got their eyes set on a bigger prize: the championship ring.
