Family plays an important role in everyone’s life. However, it could be argued that professional athletes need a stronger support system due to the vices and temptations that accompany their profession. Memphis Grizzlies’ superstar Ja Morant is no different. While his recent run-ins with law might suggest otherwise, Morant has always maintained a strong connection with his family. During an interview, Morant said, “It’s my family. They’ve been here since day one. I keep them close.”

However, in a tragic development, Ja Morant recently experienced the loss of one of his dearest family members. He posted a heartfelt tribute to his late aunt, Carol H. Morant, on his Instagram account, accompanied by the caption, “This ain’t right dawg. RIP auntie. Long live Trey. Love y’all.”

Aunt Carol isn’t the first close family member Ja has lost, as back in 2017, Ja lost one of his role models. On 11th October, 2017, Ja Morant lost his cousin and close friend, Trey Beverly, from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident. In an interview back in 2019, Morant described his relationship with Trey. He said, “Somebody who I kind of looked up to. He was like that family member that kept the family together, always brought excitement around.”

Following his selection by the Memphis Grizzlies as the 2nd overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, Ja Morant paid tribute to Trey by stating, “Live Long Trey” at the conclusion of his interview with ESPN’s Maria Taylor. Ja Morant has always had a strong bond with his family. However, it is his father, Tee Morant, who has had the biggest impact on his basketball career.

Tee Morant’s impact on Ja’s basketball career

Tee Morant, like his son, also had a burgeoning basketball career ahead of him. He played with Hall-of-Famer Ray Allen in high school and played for Claflin University in his collegiate career. However, when Ja was born, Tee took a step back from his basketball career and prioritized his family. But he made sure that Ja developed into a promising young hooper, capable of making it to the NBA.

Ja and Tee’s hard work paid dividends, as the Grizzlies drafted Morant with the 2nd pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. After his selection, an emotional Ja thanked his father. He said, “I don’t want to get too emotional up here but I just want to thank him for everything he’s done for me. He made me who I am today and I’m just thankful for it all.” Leaving aside a few instances of immaturity, Ja has repaid his father’s faith and hard work, as he has blossomed into a true superstar at the NBA level.
