Kevin Durant is one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. He has had a Hall of Fame career, winning 2 NBA Championships, 2 Finals MVP, and 1 Regular Season MVP trophy. But KD is now 35 years old and in the later stages of his career. And he might have a plan to stay associated with the NBA even after retirement. Just like LeBron James, Durant has high hopes for the expansion of the NBA and becoming part owner of the team that drafted him.

In an interview with Bleacher Report, KD was asked if he would want to be a part of the Seattle Supersonics if Adam Silver decided to bring back the franchise. “Without a doubt,” Durant responded. The Seattle Supersonics drafted Kevin Durant 2nd overall in 2007. He played one season with the historic franchise before it got moved to Oklahoma City one year later. Since then, Durant has advocated for bringing an NBA team back to Seattle because it is an amazing basketball city with a passionate fanbase. “That’s a dream come true,” KD said about the possibility of owning a team based in Seattle.

Durant is not the only superstar with a desire to own an NBA franchise. LeBron James has been manifesting a new team in Las Vegas for many years and has openly expressed his desire to own a franchise. He did the same on his latest visit to Las Vegas during the in-season tournament in December. “It’s a sports town. Hopefully, I can bring my franchise here one day.” With LeBron and Durant continuously advocating for the league’s expansion, their dream might soon turn into reality.

Adam Silver’s latest comments hint at NBA expansion soon

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recently finalized his contract extension that will take his tenure through the end of 2030. With his position secure for this decade, Silver has become more focused on the new goals of the NBA. He had this to say about a possible league expansion during The Pat McAfee Show: “We want to figure out what our media relationships are going to look like, but then we will turn to expansion.”

According to Silver, the league’s primary goal right now is to bag a lucrative media rights deal. Their current deal will expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. After the NBA has solved that issue, Adam Silver and Co. will focus on expanding the league. Silver has already said in the past that Las Vegas and Seattle are two cities that have been on their radar for a long time. So, the NBA World might see LeBron James and Kevin Durant as the owners of two new franchises when they retire from the NBA.
