Last year, Canelo Álvarez strengthened his position in the super middleweight class after defending his undisputed status against the challenge of Jermell Charlo. On the other hand, after defeating Caleb Plant, Benavidez fought against Demetrius Andrade. In the wake of his dominating win over the southpaw, the WBC ratified Benavidez as the mandatory challenger for their title, held by Canelo. So, is there a fight on the horizon? Nada. Why? Speaking to Fight Hub TV, José Benavidez Sr. did not hold himself back when asked about his son’s potential fight against the Jalisco fighter. “To be honest, I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Canelo does not want anything to happen to do with David. Every time he comes with all these excuses, all the time. But look, who he wants to fight? He wants to fight Munguia, he wants to fight Charlo, you know?”
Discussing the ‘excuses’ that Canelo has given to not fight Benavidez, the latter’s father noted, “I mean he says, David has fought nobody or this and that, I mean, but at the end of the day, those are just excuses, because he doesn’t want to fight him so.”

Is Alvarez dodging ‘The Mexican Monster’? The family patriarch adds, “He’ll do anything or his team will do anything to stay away from David. Yeah, there’s no, you know, he said that he’s the king, he’ll do whatever he wants, he’ll do whatever he wants with the commissions.” While hoping that the commissions, in this case, the WBC remain fair in their rulings, he further informed the reporter that if Canelo fails to undertake the defense by March, he can be stripped of his WBC title.
The doubts raised here by Benavidez Sr. seem valid as the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has himself said that the deadline to face Benavidez is March 2024. If that’s the case, then is Canelo ducking Benavidez?

“…I know he’s scared, he doesn’t want to face David,” exclaimed Jose Benavidez Sr. On 27th January, Jamie Munguia will fight John Ryder. The former has hinted at a possible Canelo fight after his next clash takes place. Speaking about undefeated Munguia as a potential opponent for Canelo, Benavidez Sr. said, “But yeah, you know, he comes and he wants to fight all these guys, you know what Munguia has been doing. You know, in his past four fights, he’s been looking really bad, you know.”
Canelo is also looking at Jermall Charlo, who he was originally slated to fight last year. However, Charlo excused himself, citing personal issues. Instead, his younger brother, Jermell Charlo, went up two weights to undertake that fight. Now, as the WBC middleweight titlist has made his comeback, Canelo might get that fight after all.
