Canelo Alvarez's childhood and early life
Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez was born on July 18, 1990, in Guadalajara, Mexico as the youngest child of Santos Alvarez and Anna Maria Barragan. He has six brothers: Rigoberto, Daniel, Ricardo, Gonzalo, Victor, and Ramon, and one sister, Ana Elda Alvarez.?
Though originally from Los Reyes, a small municipality in Mexico?s Michoacan state, they eventually relocated to their current residence in Juanacatl?n, in Jalisco state.
He never completed schooling, deciding to drop out in the eighth grade, much to his parent?s disappointment. He wanted to ensure his focus was on boxing and nothing else.
When he was younger, his older brothers often made him the scapegoat if a conflict occurred in school. Though they were already into boxing, ?Canelo? interestingly never followed his elder brothers into boxing.
The activity that fascinated his young mind first was horseriding. Even now, he ranks it as his second favorite activity to indulge in, after boxing.?
During childhood, he had an array of nicknames, such as J?cama con Chile, which meant jicama (Mexican turnip) with chili flakes, and Entomatado or Enchilado, which was attributed to his red hair as well as his fiery temper.
His current nickname, ?Canelo,? is the Spanish word for the spice cinnamon. In Mexico, the word is often used for people with red hair. It is speculated that the boxer might have inherited the trait from an Irish ancestor.?
Canelo Alvarez's family
?Canelo? Alvarez is married to Fernanda Gomez, whom he met for the first time in 2017 at a charity event. A year after they started dating, the duo became proud parents to Maria Fernanda Alvarez. They got married in May 2021 at a cathedral in Guadalajara.
However, before settling down with Gomez, the world champion was in relationships with other women. His first known relationship was with his childhood sweetheart Karen Beltran. He had his first child, Emily Cinnamon Alvarez, with her in 2007. Alvarez was barely seventeen at the time.
But the relationship didn?t last long, and Karen and Alvarez went their separate ways. Then he got into a relationship with a model, Valeria Quiroz. With her, he had his second child, Mia Ener Alvarez. Unfortunately, this relationship also failed, with Mia Ener staying with her mother in Los Angeles.
Next, he got into a relationship with his business partner Nadia Sepulveda. A year after they started seeing each other, the couple welcomed their son Saul Ediel Alvarez. Unfortunately, like the previous two, this relationship ended with Spulveda and Alvarez breaking up.
Then there are other names, whom the boxer reportedly dated, such as actress Kate del Castillo, Venezuelan model Shannon de Lima, Mexican singer Cynthia Rodriguez, and actress Marisol Gonzalez, a Miss Mexico Universe 2003, with whom he was engaged from 2010 to 2012.
Canelo Alvarez's boxing career
His elder brother Rigoberto?s professional debut got ?Canelo? Alvarez hooked on boxing. He was thirteen at the time. Among the remaining brothers, Ramon Alvarez and Ricardo Alvarez were Welterweight boxers.
A year after he started training, in 2004, he won his first medal, a silver, at the Junior Mexican National Championships in Sinaloa. Next year, he bettered his performance and became the Junior National Boxing Champion. Before he turned fifteen, Alvarez?s amateur record stood at forty-four wins against two losses.
On October 29, 2005, at age fifteen, ?Canelo? Alvarez debuted professionally against Abraham Gonzalez. However, it wasn?t until 2007 that he won his first title, Jalisco Welterweight, on August 31, after defeating Ricardo Cano.

Though his subsequent move to become the WBA (Super) Light Heavyweight champion failed, he successfully defended the Super Middleweight titles against old rival Gennady Golovkin?s challenge during their trilogy fight.
Canelo Alvarez's signature boxing techniques
Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez is one of the most un-Mexican boxers you would encounter. Mexican boxers are renowned for their aggressive style of boxing. The best example could be the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, who would wage his war right from the first round.
Alvarez, on the other hand, has adopted a more American way of boxing, over time. It involves wearing down an opponent to the extent that he starts making mistakes, eventually helping the champion to force a decision-based victory. At times, as shown in the past, he?d punish the opponent during the last rounds with a knockout.
It?s well-known that Alvarez is one of those rare breeds of boxers in complete control of their punches. As a result, it?s rare to see the champion getting himself involved with an unwarranted attack.
Let?s look at some of his signature techniques.
Pressure Fighter: Alvarez established his reputation as a pressure fighter with his eleventh-round win over the Russian Sergey Kovalev in a Light Heavyweight title fight.
With fifty seconds left in the round, ?Canelo? cornered Kovalev at the ropes. First, a left hook numbed the Russian. Then, no longer in a position to defend himself, the Mexican?s right cross sealed his fate, sending him down on the ropes.
Of late, Alvarez has been chasing the opponent down, taking small steps with a high guard. This helps him close distance, and when he reaches an attacking range, a flurry of hooks or crosses closes the deal.?
The move invariably panics most opponents, who need clarification to devise a strategy to counter the pouncing Mexican.
Terrific Counter-Puncher: Often hailed as probably the best counter-puncher in the trade, Alvarez, by and large, resorts to slipping through a jab and responds by launching a right-handed straight or a cross.
He even risks an overhand right if the timing and position are apt. For instance, he employed the technique against long-time rival Gennady Golovkin, and Miguel Cotto.
Another example could be the incredible knockout of the Briton Amir Khan in 2016. Another move ?Canelo? uses is the 'pull counter' which involves pulling back and immediately shooting a counter punch, which may include a right uppercut.?
Stiff Jab: The most primary of all boxing punches, ?Canelo? Alvarez uses it to a devastating effect. Firstly, it helps him keep the opponents at a distance. Then he uses his jab to keep them engaged, which leverages him to build striking combinations and openings.
One of the tricks he often employs is keeping a high guard while leaning his body forward. This makes it difficult for the foe to decide what he plans to do next.?
Then there is the technique where he launches a jab from a lowered angle. It?s a feint move that often takes bigger opponents by surprise.?
Continuing with the feint, he often executes a jab, not intending to make a connection but to entice the opponent into lowering his guard. Thus it clears a path for him to throw a clean right hand. The 2015 third-round knockout of James Kirkland is one such example.
Combination Puncher: A masterful technique practitioner, Alvarez uses his combinations to break the opponent?s resistance. The best part is that he never lets his guard down or gets caught unawares while doing so.
He is known for his intelligent use of combinations to build openings and, at times, stops for a while to see how the opponent is reacting and quickly changes his direction to shoot an unexpected punch.?
Additionally, he uses various combinations that leave the foe perplexed, who otherwise, over the rounds, might become used to a particular set of punches.
Outstanding Head Movement: ?Canelo? Alvarez has exceptional head movement abilities for an offensive boxer. He loves coming forward, enticing opponents to take a shot at his head, which invariably fails to connect, thanks to his constant bobbing and weaving of his head.
The Mexican took it as a lesson after the 2013 defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr., another great exponent of the head movement. Moving his head like a 'snake' makes it hard for a foe to hit Alvarez with precision, giving him time to find gaps and openings to launch an offensive.
Canelo Alvarez's car collection, yacht, and other luxuries
Obviously, for a boxer, who is shy of two years to complete two decades in the trade, the amassed wealth and affluence should give ample opportunities to have the proverbial best that money can buy.
Regarding luxury or a luxurious lifestyle, ?Canelo? Alvarez still has miles to go to outdo his former rival, the uber-wealthy Floyd Mayweather Jr. However, the Mexican champion does have a thing or two that bespeak his taste.?
Let?s look at a few of the glitzy rides he has parked in the garage of his massive mansion in Guadalajara.
- McLaren 650S: Priced at $269,000, the vehicle?s 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine generates 641 horsepower. It has a top speed of 204 miles per hour and covers zero to sixty miles per hour in 2.9 seconds.
- Rolls Royce Ghost: Reportedly, the boxer doesn?t drive the model, for he must have paid $314,400. A few of its key specifications include a 6.6-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine producing 563 horsepower. Its top speed is 155 miles per hour, from zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.8 seconds.
- Lamborghini Avantedor LP 700-4: Interestingly, the world champion has multiple generations of Avantedors in his collection. The LP 700-4 that he has is pure white. He bought it for $400,000. The model has 700 horsepower that comes from a 6.5-liter V12 engine. It takes barely 2.9 seconds to go from zero to sixty miles per hour, besides having a top speed limit of 217 miles per hour.
- Lamborghini Aventador S: The Strada had a price tag of $418,000. Its 6.5-liter V12 can generate 740 horsepower. When it comes to speed, it can go up to 217 miles per hour and zooms from zero to sixty miles per hour in 2.9 seconds.
- Lamborghini Aventador SV: Alvarez must have shelled around half a million dollars to get this beauty with 750 horsepower thrust by the mighty 6.5-liter V12 engine. Reportedly the luxury car makers made only six hundred pieces of the model. The ?Super Veloce? or 'Super Speed', has a maximum speed limit of 217 miles per hour and goes from zero to sixty miles per hour in 2.8 seconds.
- Lamborghini Aventador SVJ: ?The Super Veloce Jotta? came with a price tag of $523,000. There are reportedly only nine hundred pieces of the limited version model. Its 759 horsepower comes from a 6.5-liter V12 engine. With a top speed of 217 miles, the car goes from zero to sixty miles per hour in 2.6 seconds.
- Brabus B63 S 700 6x6: ?Canelo? is a proud owner of one of the hundred pieces of Mercedes AMG G63?s 6x6 version. Interestingly, the limited version can be run only under special conditions, such as for a show or a display, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Priced at $511,000, the mammoth 6x6 has roughly 700 horsepower. It has a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It takes about 4.4 seconds to cover zero to sixty miles per hour.
- Mercedes Maybach G650 Landaulet: An outcome of a collaborative effort between Mercedes Benz and Maybach, the Landaulet is intended to give its user an off-road experience without letting go of any attached luxuries. Taken after the G65 AMG SUV, it reportedly came at $1.3 million. Unfortunately, there are only ninety-nine pieces of the model ever made. The Landaulet has a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine thrusting 630 horsepower. It has a top speed of 112 miles per hour and takes less than 6 seconds to go from zero to sixty miles per hour.
- Ferrari La Ferrari: The successor to Ferrari Enzo has Formula 1 hybrid technology called HY-KERS System. The $1.42 million hypercar is the second most expensive vehicle in Alvarez?s garage. The Italian car maker made only 499 pieces of the model with a massive 950 horsepower from its 6.3-liter V12 engine that works with a single-motor electric hybrid system. It has a top speed of 215 miles per hour and takes 2.5 seconds to go from zero to sixty miles per hour.
- Bugatti Chiron: At $3 million, Chiron is reportedly the world champion's most expensive car. The hypercar in EB110 Blue has 1500 horsepower that is generated by its 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine. It takes 2.6 seconds to cover zero to sixty miles per hour and touches the top speed limit of 261 miles per hour.
If reports are believed, Alvarez is selling it for $4 million. Besides the above, the undisputed champion owns McLarens, a Mustang 500 Eleano, Shelby Mustang, Ferrari 458, Lamborghini Urus, and the limited edition Lamborghini Gallardo, among others.
Besides the four wheels, ?Canelo? Alvarez owns a $60 million black yacht having jet skis, a bespoke jetty, and a raft, among several other amenities.
Alvarez's private jet is estimated to be worth over $35 million, and he frequently uses it to jet around the world for fights, events, and vacations.
Regarding real estate, ?Canelo? now resides in his native Mexico, Guadalajara, where he was raised. Before that, he had a California house worth $6 million. It covered an area of 11,970 square feet.?
Regarding his upkeep, ?Canelo? is known for his penchant for high-end designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Supreme, Gucci, Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, and others.?

Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya Feud: The $365 million DAZN Deal and Lawsuit
The subscription sports streaming service DAZN announced on October 17, 2018, that it had inked a deal with ?Canelo? Alvarez worth $365 million to last five years. Per the agreement, the service would broadcast eleven of his fights in the United States.
It was billed as the 'biggest deal in boxing?s history'. However, barely two years lasted when the champion filed a case against his promoter Oscar De La Hoya and DAZN for ?breach of contract.?
According to the case filed at the US District Court for the central district of California, Alvarez sought damages to $280 million.
Per the agreement, for his next eleven matches, Alvarez would receive $365 million. It included a $15 million guaranteed amount for a fight against Rocky Fielding on December 2018.?
Subsequently, he would receive $35 million for each fight for the remaining ten matches. The $35 million guarantees were supposed to be deducted from DAZN?s $40 million license fee it was supposed to hand over to 'Golden Boy Promotions'.
But Alvarez claimed he received the guaranteed purse for the Fielding fight and the subsequent two battles in 2019, against Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev, respectively. But DAZN and 'Golden Boy Promotions' still need to devise an appropriate plan of fights for him to participate in 2020.?
On the other hand, the world champion, given the financial problem brought around by Coronavirus, was willing to accept ?in good faith,? amount below the ones guaranteed to him.
Canelo Alvarez's longtime trainer Eddy Reynoso and their relationship
The manager and trainer of Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is fellow Mexican and boxing coach Eddy Reynoso. After passing the CONADE (Certification System of the Sports Coach) exam, the latter became qualified as a professional boxing coach at twenty-two.
He took ?Canelo? under his wings at fifteen when the latter turned professional. They share a special bond because the trainer had watched him grow from a small boy into a world champion when Alvarez's older brother, Rigoberto, first took him to his gym in Mexico?s Guadalajara.
His left forearm?s outer side features a tattoo of Alvarez?s face and body. Undoubtedly, both have reached the stage where they are making history. However, Reynoso knows his job is to keep ?Canelo? safe. Despite parting in 2022, Reynoso is well-known for collaborating with Ryan Garcia.
Reynoso has also trained world champions like Julio Cesar Martinez and Oscar Valdez. Moreover, Reynoso has previously teamed with former heavyweight champ Andy Ruiz Jr.
Canelo Alvarez's other controversies
Ahead of the second fight against Gennady Golovkin, Alvarez failed a drug test for clenbuterol in March 2018. The Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) said in March that his urine samples obtained in Mexico in February tested positive for the mentioned drug.
According to Alvarez?s camp, the Super Middleweight champion had taken tainted meat containing clenbuterol, a prescription-only drug for asthma. However, because of its possible performance-enhancing effects, it is prohibited by boxing?s anti-doping rules.
On April 18, the Nevada State Athletic Commission placed ?Canelo? under a six-month suspension. However, it was back-dated 17 February, when he failed the drug test the first time. On August 17, the ban was taken off.?
