14-Year-Old British Hiker Airlifted After 100 Foot Tumble Leads to Severe Injuries

Amidst the untamed beauty of Eryri, a young hiker and his expedition took a dangerous turn when he lost his footing and tumbled down the slopes of Tryfan, the 3,010ft summit. In a race against the elements, a frantic call for help from the boy’s worried mother engulfed the night sky.

At that moment, the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team (OVMRT) sprang into action to answer the desperate plea. As dusk descended, their mission began: to find and rescue the injured 14-year-old before time ran out. From that point on, every second was critical in ensuring the boy’s survival.

Lying amidst the harsh terrain, the boy was painfully aware of his injuries and the precariousness of his situation. A daunting search began as the rescue team had limited information on his whereabouts. Despite the darkness and uncertainty, they persevered. Above the rugged peaks of the mountain, the HM Coastguard rescue helicopter bravely navigated through the night sky. 

After hours of searching, at around 8 p.m., a glimmer of hope emerged as the helicopter located the boy on the west face of Tryfan. Faced with treacherous terrain and extreme conditions, the rescue team fearlessly leaped into action to save the boy. They split into two groups to navigate the hazardous surroundings and approach the injured boy from above and below.

As they battled cliffs and loose scree rocks, the fate of the young man rested on the precarious landscape. With unwavering determination, the Coastguards’ 936 helicopters descended through the darkness.

 

Its winchman bravely descended onto the mountainside, carefully assessing the boy’s condition. To their astonishment, he was still conscious, his unyielding spirit unbroken despite his injuries.

It brought an end to a miraculous rescue effort by the team. The young hiker, who perhaps lost all hope, saw light at the end of the tunnel. They finally rescued him, and his worried mother let out a sigh of relief.

They quickly strapped the stranded hiker and settled him down. As the minutes ticked away towards midnight, he was skillfully hoisted into the air and brought to safety, surrounded by his grateful mother and brother. However, for the devoted individuals of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team, their mission was far from complete. With fatigue setting in, they retraced their steps back to their headquarters, with their spirits weighed down by the events of the night.

The boy’s condition remains unknown, but he was not in any danger. Although, the injuries he sustained will take some time to recover fully.
