“I love being the hype woman. Sometimes, you know they think I get on their nerves all the time, but it is what it is.” Jordan Chiles has been unapologetically herself since day one, showcasing her fervent passion to support her friends. For the longest time, Simone Biles has been her best friend. And together – as the dynamic’ Biles and Chiles’ duo – they exemplify their supportive energy. As many trophies as they may have won together, nothing compares to creating an environment where others thrive, too. Biles did just that for Chiles, leading to an unforgettable moment that the 22-year-old reminisced about.

With the tagline, “Black is Gold,” TOGETHXR – an influential brand in women’s sports – shared a series of iconic moments celebrating black women in gymnastics. Captioning the Instagram post, “Beaming with pride,” one of the pictures was the same one Simone Biles shared after the 2021 US Olympic Team Trials, congratulating Chiles for her performance. GK Elite shared TOGETHXR’s post on its story, writing, “Throwback to an incredible moment in history with two of the strongest women @jordanchiles @simonebiles.”

Jordan Chiles reshared the story on her Instagram handle, no doubt thinking about everything that led up to that moment with Biles at the 2021 Olympic trials, as well as all that has followed. Back in 2018, the now-22-year-old was on the verge of stepping away from gymnastics for good. She told the Times“I guess this sport is coming to an end for me because things just aren’t working out for me at all whatsoever.” However, Simone Biles helped Chiles realize her love for the sport again.

After training with Biles, “I discovered that gymnastics doesn’t always have to be about strictness and being so hard on yourself,” Chiles explained. Taking inspiration from the legend, the 22-year-old found herself again. And that led to her qualifying for the 2020 Summer Olympics, following which Biles posted the photo, captioning it, “proud is an understatement.” Jordan Chiles showed her appreciation for Simone Biles as well, writing, “You always have that one person that can change your whole life….. and this my friend is you.”

Since then, they’ve been inseparable, lifting each other up. Another shared event etched in history was the 2023 Xfinity US Gymnastics National Championship. While Simone Biles had remarkable performances throughout, Chiles had her fair share of heartbreak due to a fall during her uneven bars routine. However, despite that, Chiles continued, earning her spot in the Senior U.S. Women’s National Team.

Even during the event, Chiles continued to hype Simone Biles up. “She’s 26 years old, and she’s doing big gymnastics,” she remarked. While Jordan Chiles has become the de facto “hype woman” for the US team, she’ll need someone to take over the role at the Winter Cup, as the 22-year-old will be cheering from home.

Jordan Chiles backs out from the Winter Cup after Simone Biles’ exit

When the Winter Cup announced its entry list for the 2024 event, a big name was missing. Simone Biles. And soon after that, Jordan Chiles joined her best friend. Citing a shoulder injury as her reason, the 22-year-old – who led the US squad at the 2023 Pan American Games – was understandably frustrated. However, she created an air of anticipation for her return as she made the announcement on social media.

Chiles wrote, “Hey guys! I tweaked my shoulder, which has prevented me from training at the level I am comfortable with leading up to a competition. I am frustrated I can’t perform for you all, but this is also part of our sport, and things like this only fuel me for what’s coming. Can’t wait to show you what we have cookin’. Just a little while longer. See you soon!”
