A historic moment occurred just recently in the world of swimming. With a gold in the 800-meter freestyle,22 YO Daniel Wiffen forged Irish history. A land famed for its impeccable Guinness whisky has now produced a swimming prodigy too. The lanky Wiffen came the closest, finishing fourth in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle events in Fukuoka last year, but no Irish swimmer had ever placed on the podium in the long-course World Championships before the race. Doha saw him steadily rise to glory, winning the freestyle 800 m gold, usurping his competitors with a landslide victory and ardent fans rallied in solidarity for the prodigious youngster.
