The UFC 298 pay-per-view (PPV) may sound a little different this weekend in Anaheim. Former UFC double champion, Daniel Cormier has been one of the most entertaining color commentators for over the past few years. His chemistry with fellow UFC commentators, Jon Anik, and Joe Rogan are some of the best in sports. This is also one of the reasons why fans were gutted by hearing that the former champ wouldn’t be calling the fights at UFC 298: Volkanovski vs. Topuria.

There were quite a lot of people who wanted to know why the trio wouldn’t work together for the event, given how crucial commentators are for the proper running of an event. Speculations abound regarding the absence of the former UFC champion from the commentary team at UFC 298. Perhaps there’s a plausible reason behind it.

However, it should be noted that the former UFC double champion has a lot going on in his life other than his commentary work at the UFC. Cormier, other than being a father, has also been a wrestling coach for quite some time. He is the wrestling coach at the Gilroy High School, California, south of San Jose.

Just as coincidence might have it, according to Gilroy High School’s official schedule, the high school will be having the CCS Masters Championship on the same date as UFC 298. This could be the reason why “DC” might be skipping commentating the event, given how much importance he gives to the wrestlers under him.

Cormier was announced as their new head coach in 2018. The principal and assistant coach, Dr. Marco Sanchez, of Gilroy High School was delighted to have DC on their side and said, “We are very fortunate to find a coach with such an amazing background in the sport of wrestling and mixed martial arts… Daniel Cormier is real fired up and excited about the prospects for next year and so are our wrestlers.”

However, it was reported that former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping will replace the ex-heavyweight titleholder. Bisping confirmed the news on his official podcast and said, “I’m looking forward to it. I posted the other day, ‘I’m working with the GOATs,’ and I mean that. When it comes to play-by-play, [Jon Anik] is the man. Joe Rogan invented the role of mixed martial arts commentary. It’s always a pleasure and that fight card, top-to-bottom, is phenomenal.”

Despite Daniel Cormier not calling the fights for UFC 298, the event still has some of the best commentators calling the fights for the upcoming PPV event.

Daniel Cormier, most of the time, is a part of the commentary booth when it comes to massive UFC PPV events. So his not being a part of the commentary booth for UFC 298 came as a surprise for the MMA world.

Though fans were disappointed upon hearing Daniel Cormier wouldn’t be calling the fights, the UFC still managed to pull an incredible commentary team for the upcoming UFC PPV event. Which, in all fairness, isn’t as surprising given how many talented commentators the UFC boasts.
