The 36-year-old fighter was born to Mexican immigrants Jorge Cejudo and Nelly Rico. He spent his early childhood in Los Angeles. However, Cejudo along with his family first moved to New Mexico and subsequently to Phoenix.
Cejudo is the youngest of his siblings, Jorge and Alonzo Cejudo, his brothers, and Ana Karolina, Maria, and Gloria Cejudo, his sisters.
Cejudo got enrolled at Grand Canyon University in 2010, the same year he picked up amateur boxing. He graduated in 2015 with a degree in theology. He found inspiration in his elder brother, Angel Cejudo, and devoted his focus to wrestling.

Following this, Cejudo mounted a challenge for the vacant UFC bantamweight title and etched his name in history after defeating Marlon Moraes at UFC 238. In a bid to focus on the 135 lbs division, he relinquished his flyweight title.
However, Cejudo surprised the MMA world as he announced his retirement from UFC after successfully defending his title against Dominick Cruz in May 2020. Markedly, he called off his retirement to face Aljamain Sterling at UFC 288 and lost via split decision.
For his next bout against Marlon Vera, in UFC 292, Cejudo withdrew owing to a shoulder injury. And now he is scheduled to face Merab Dvalishvili for UFC 298.
