Soon enough, we might have the first LIV golfer on the PGA Tour. No thanks to the merger agreement for that. The Tour in a bid to attract a wider audience, will have its one-of-a-kind qualifier for the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, where the name of Turk Pettit has taken a few aback. 

Pettit, the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Individual Champion, had previously teed up at LIV Golf in 2022. Furthermore, only last December, the 25-year-old was in Abu Dhabi, taking a shot at the LIV Golf Promotions event. So, how has he been selected to play at a Tour-sanctioned event?

Can Turk Pettit on in the PGA Tour?

Pettit plied his trade at the LIV Golf in 2022, playing all 12 events but failing to make an impact. His team, Niblicks GC, also changed to Range Goats GC as Bubba Watson revamped the squad. Out of luck on the Berakway side, Pettit went back to the Asian Tour, which, despite its ties with LIV Golf, is a member of the International Federation of PGA Tours.

The Tour bans players only for a year for teeing off in the LIV Golf events. Pettit’s last LIV Golf outing came in Jeddah in 2022, where he finished in 38th place on the leaderboard. So, he has already undergone that suspension. The 25-year-old also tried his luck at last year’s LIV Golf Promotion event but couldn’t enter the fray.

Since the Tour didn’t officially ban the players entering the Promotions event, Pettit came unscathed. So, there is no bar for Pettit to tee up at any PGA Tour-sanctioned qualifying tournament. Now, capitalizing on that, he will tie up the Q school for Myrtle Beach Classic.

In his last outing on the Tour, the Seneca native tied for the 31st spot in the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. Notably, the Clemson University alum also entered the second stage of the PGA Tour Q school but failed to earn his Tour card. The Q-school for the Myrtle Beach Classic will consist of golf content creators and Korn Ferry Tour veterans.

What is the Q at Myrtle Beach?

Golf Tourism Solutions and Visit Myrtle Beach will jointly host the school tournament on March 4, when Turk Pettit will compete at TPC Myrtle Beach. The event, however, will be closed to the public. The Tour will release a ninety-minute video on YouTube on April 26, two weeks before the event starts at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.

Other than Turk Pettit, Geroge Bryan IV, who made the cut at the 2023 Bermuda Championship, and Morgan Deneen, who last participated in the 2023 Fortinet Championship, will also tee up. Among popular golf content creators, Grant Horvat, Dan Rapaport, and Nick Stubbe, a.k.a. Fat Perez, will also play the Myrtle Beach Q-School. Myrtle Beach Classic will have a purse of $3.6 million, and the winner will also earn 700 FedEx Cup points.
