The most distinguished names in baseball aren’t only the ones who play in the ballpark every day. Sometimes the biggest ones stay in the shadows. They use their power and intelligence to orchestrate moves that not even the greatest pundits can see. The most well-known name in those shadows happens to be Scott Boras. The Super Agent has been omnipresent in baseball circles since he began in the 80s. Although he started quite small, in no time he had created an image of procuring big contracts for his clients. Their names and their repute in MLB say it all.

1. Alex Rodriguez
Seven years into retirement, Alex Rodriguez remains one of the most iconic clients represented by Scott Boras. A-Rod signed a massive $252 million contract in 2000 with the Texas Rangers. It was the most lucrative sports contract up to that point. The chief architect of that deal was of course his agent. But the more interesting story is of 2007.

2. Prince Fielder
One of the heaviest hitters during his heyday, Prince Fielder was a special client of Scott Boras. When Fielder became a free agent after the 2011 season, few thought he’d sign a big contract. Most believed that the slugger’s minute demand did not bode well for his future. It was a bit true, as even though he’d had a great career until then, the market was rather lukewarm in 2011-12. But again Boras worked his magic and found a massive contract for his client. Fielder ended up signing a $214 million contract for 9 years with the Detroit Tigers. This was a number that far exceeded anyone’s wildest imagination.
3. Mark Teixeira
The former New York Yankees first base Mark Teixeira had been a Boras client since his college days. The agent got him a relatively high contract for a drafted player when he signed a $9.5 million contract with the Rangers. But it was in 2008 that he created history. “Tex” signed a contract worth $180 million for 8 years with the Yankees.
This made him the then-biggest first-base signing in the sport. In two consecutive years, Boras had made two people sign massive record-breaking contracts with the Yankees. First it was A-Rod in 2007, then Tex in 2008. It was certainly not the last time.
4. Barry Zito
The winner of the 2012 World Series, Barry Zito was one of the best pitchers of his time. He signed the then record-breaking highest contract for a pitcher worth $126 million with the San Francisco Giants. With a salary of $18 million, it was the first of three consecutive years of eye-popping deals involving Boras.
5. Matt Holliday
The 2011 World Series winner and one of the best sluggers to have ever played baseball, Matt Holliday broke the St. Louis Cardinals record when he signed a contract worth $120 million with them. This was the biggest contract ever in the history of the Cards up to that point. Boras had represented Holliday since the beginning of his professional career. Holliday has consistently praised Boras for his accessibility, the facilities that he provides to the players, and the overall environment that he fosters.
6. Johnny Damon
Johnny Damon holds a distinct accolade of winning a World Series with both the Boston Red Sox (2004) and the New York Yankees (2009). Although his deal did not have high value like the previous players, the story of it was more interesting. In 2005-06, he was in negotiations with the Red Sox to extend his contract.
Scott Boras had made some strict demands of the Red Sox and told them that they’d join the Yankees if their demands weren’t met. The BoSox management didn’t take him seriously and Boras ended up doing exactly what he said. This was an example of how Boras always has options open for his clients.
7. JD Drew
Scott Boras has caused baseball rules to change on multiple occasions. One such situation involved J.D. Drew. Boras had been representing him since college and insisted that Drew hold out on signing a draft contract. Interestingly, this was something Boras told every one of his clients. It was a tactic to increase the amount offered for the deal and he succeeded in the case of Drew when the Cardinals offered him a $7 million offer. Afterward, a deadline was introduced for draft picks in order to stop Boras from stalling the process of contract signing.
The other 3 names are Carlos Beltran, Jayson Werth, Kevin Brown
Kevin Brown broke yet another record and was the first person to sign a contract that was more than $100 million. Carlos Beltran and Jayson Werth were Boras’ other massive $100 million+ contract-signing clients. Jayson Werth witnessed Scott Boras’ talents firsthand as merely 3 months after hiring him, he had a $126 million contract offered to him by the Washington Nationals. These were the past clients of Scott Boras but he still remains active in the baseball circle.
Present clients of Scott Boras
1. Pete Alonso
The New York Mets First base is one of the most prominent names managed by Scott Boras. The 2019 National League Rookie of the Year has been a tremendous player in Queens. For his entire tenure with the Amazin’ Mets, he has been Amazin’ Pete. Although his free agency will arrive in 2024, there is no doubt that Boras will ensure that Alonso signs huge numbers. The magic of Boras will be visible in 2023 itself if the Mets decide to trade Alonso.
2. Bryce Harper
The Philadelphia Phillies’ leading man, Bryce Harper, is one of the most famous clients of the 71-year-old agent. He signed the biggest and the most unusual contract in 2019, worth $330 million, the biggest one signed up until then. The uniqueness of that deal was the absence of an opt-out clause which meant that Harper would play at the Phillies for the entirety of his 13-year term.
But this was actually not the first time he and Harper had broken a record – they had done it way back in 2010 as well. The 17-year-old slugger signed a $9.9 million contract with the Nationals, the highest a drafted player had signed till then.
3. Corey Seager
The Two-time World Champion and World Series MVP (2020/2023), Corey Seager is another prominent name on the list. Boras has been with him since his college days, helping him sign a contract that was $400,000 above the slot value when he was drafted. Later in 2021, Seager signed a contract worth $325 million with the Texas Rangers. This was the second 100 million-plus contract that Boras had negotiated with the Lone Stars in 2 days. The other is the $175 million contract of Marcus Semien.
4. Juan Soto
The 2019 World Series winner is currently one of the biggest names in baseball. Though his free agency is yet to arrive, Boras has been exceptional when it comes to negotiating salary for the Dominican. Soto is expected to earn a $33 million salary in 2023. Now with so many suitors for the slugger, Boras is only going to get more opportunities to register Soto’s name in the record books.
5. Gerrit Cole
The lovable New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole signed a massive $324 million contract with the Bronx Bombers in 2019. This is currently the biggest contract signed by a pitcher. Cole was represented by Boras since his draft days. He was the no.1 draft pick in 2011, the third consecutive time a Boras client was picked as no.1. Cole has had a tremendous career with the Yankees and has recently been on the news for his non-baseball activities.
6. Xander Bogaerts
The two-time World Series winner (2013, 2018) and 5 times Silver Slugger winner Xander Bogaerts is a name that is known to every fan. The current San Diego Padres shortstop was one of the standout players during his Boston Red Sox days. Due to his talent and Boras’ experience he was able to sign a contract worth $280 million with the Friars in 2022.
7. Max Scherzer
The two-time World Series champion (2019, 2023) is one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball today. In his career, Max Scherzer has signed multiple massive contracts. A humungous $210 million contract with the Washington Nationals in 2015, with whom he won a World Series in 2019. Then in 2021, he signed a $130 million contract with the New York Mets. He was traded to the Rangers mid 2023, with whom he ended up winning his second World Series in 2023.

Other names are Jose Altuve, Carlos Rodon, and Cody Bellinger
Jose Altuve is the longest-tenured player of the Houston Astros. The two-time World Series Champion (2018/2022) is one of the most successful clients of Scott Boras. While Carlos Rodon is a two-time All-Star (2021-22), he signed with the Yankees in 2023 for a contract worth $162 million.
Cody Bellinger is currently one of the most sought-after free agents in the league. The former MVP had a career renaissance after he joined the Chicago Cubs in 2022. Now he is expected to sign a giant contract wherever he goes next.
