What began as a fantastic start for the 2022 Cup Series champion, Joey Logano, in a split second turned into a disaster. Grabbing the pole as the fastest during qualifying, Logano was the name to bet your money on, as the driver had experience and a quick car that gave him a front-row start in the “Great American Race.” However, as the race moved to its climax Ross Chastain’s bold attempt led to a wreck at the track.

Logano’s initial momentum did not see him through with a decisive win but instead, he was left with regret after the late wreck of the race took out the 2-time Cup Series champion along with several others.

The 200-lap feature was heading for a spectacular finish, with Ryan Blaney claiming the second stage of the race. Unlike the first stage, the second one was more of a green one, staying green for the most part until a late wreck with just eight laps to go completely changed the playing field.

The race was wide open, and several cars were chasing Ross Chastain, who was running first. Two cars behind him was Alex Bowman, who appeared to nudge the # 24 of William Byron. Byron started to swerve and hit #6 Brad Keselowski. Speaking of this, Logano let out, “the #1 [Chastain] was throwing audacious blocks…”

The wreck further saw Brad Keselowski bump into the #22 Ford of Joey Logano and take a bunch of cars out of the track. Consequently, multiple cars were caught up in the crash as the red flag came out. A total of 18 cars were involved in the crash, though not all the cars were knocked out of the race.

Reflecting on his sour ending, Joey Logano said, “So, the show was a bummer, so less, I think it requires the essence, it was so fast that he had a line that you wouldn’t believe, I think it bleed a lot like a guy like you wouldn’t believe, it’s just that we had so much speed that, its speedway racing, its a lot of fun until it sucks.” 

Chastain on the other hand was not feeling any remorse for his attempt. He said, “I took the gap, and I don’t apologize for that. I can go to sleep tonight knowing that I took the white flag making the move to win the Daytona 500.”

Chastain’s aggressive racing did end up affecting 18 cars and some big names on the track.

The Big One at the Daytona 500

Surviving the threats from the bad weather, NASCAR’s biggest spectacle, the Daytona 500, finally got underway on Monday in front of the jam-packed stands. Most fans could smell something cooking, and an eerie feeling crept in as they recalled the caution-riddled Xfinity, Truck Series races.

The fandom couldn’t foresee the late wreck that would happen with eight laps to the checkered. With eight laps remaining in The Great American Race, it snapped. In total, 18 cars were swept up in the wreck at Daytona International Speedway, including some of the biggest names in NASCAR. 2022 Cup Series champion, Joey Logano who was eyeing a stellar comeback got his Daytona dreams squashed despite the stellar qualifying run, marking Team Penske‘s first-ever Daytona pole.

A nudge by the #48 of Bowman into the back of Byron appeared to push him into his HMS teammate, Chase Elliott. His #9 HMS Chevy Camaro then spun, ticking off a domino effect after which much of the field collided. According to Fox Sports, Kyle Larson, Brad Keselowski, Noah Gragson, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Chase Briscoe, Chris Buescher, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano, Todd Gilliland, Ryan Preece, Erik Jones, Tyler Reddick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Ty Gibbs, Anthony Alfredo, and Daniel Suarez were also all involved.

This led to William Byron taking the white flag before the caution came out and he was declared the winner.
